What is Mark Zuckerberg’s (Facebook) ‘Metaverse’ plan ?

Facebook, Inc. and Meta Platforms “Meta, Inc.” are redirected here. See Meta for other businesses with comparable names (company). Facebook is a social media website.

The multinational technology conglomerate Meta Platforms, Inc., doing business as Meta and formerly known as Facebook, Inc., is based in Menlo Park, California. In addition to other subsidiaries, the company is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Along with Amazon, Google, Apple, and Microsoft, Meta is one of the most valuable companies in the world. She is regarded as a member of the Big Tech group in American information technology. The sale of advertising placements to marketers accounts for a sizeable portion of the company’s income. Meta’s goods and services are also available, such as Facebook, Messenger, Facebook Watch, and Facebook Portal.

Additionally, it owns a 9.99% stake in Jio Platforms and has acquired Oculus, Giphy, and Mapillary. Media outlets reported that the parent company of Facebook intended to change its name to “reflect its focus on building the metaverse” in October 2021; on October 28 that year, the company changed its name to Meta. The Greek word “meta” refers to something “beyond,” which highlights the futuristic theme.

1. What prompted Facebook to rebrand as Meta?

Facebook has been actively working to bring VR and AR to the Internet for a long time. When it purchased VR headset manufacturer Oculus VR in 2014, the company first demonstrated its interest in bringing immersive experiences. Facebook intends to use the decision to enter the virtual “metaverse further” and change the company’s name to Meta to significantly change how it conducts business.

“In the future, the Metaverse will come first, not Facebook. In the future, you won’t need a Facebook account to access any of our other services, according to Zuckerberg.

When Facebook announced its Horizon Workrooms VR Remote Work app in August, it gave us a sneak peek at what we may see with its metaverse move. Additionally, it began spending millions of dollars on developing the Metaverse with both old and new resources.

2. How will data privacy be affected?

The timing of the job announcement has drawn attention and been called into doubt by experts. Even though the company has not provided many details regarding data privacy and how data will be used and protected in the Metaverse, severe concerns regarding Facebook’s past handling of user data continue to cast a shadow over the project, which ultimately results in the qualitatively different approaches the company would have to take this time.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a part of a strategy to stay in step with regulators while developing new technology, has some of the strictest data privacy and processing rules worldwide. As a result, the idea of the Metaverse is currently centered around Europe.

3. Facebook could expand its influence on our lives.

Facebook will likely become even more dominant than it already is if the Metaverse develops as it sees fit. Currently, Facebook’s business is constrained by the two digital behemoths, Apple and Google, who essentially control access to the mobile Internet.

For compatibility with Apple and Google operating systems, Facebook builds its mobile app software. In exchange, the iPhone app for Facebook gets a 30 percent fee split between Apple and Google (a policy Facebook has long denounced). Apple has the power to exert pressure on Facebook regarding its content policies. For example, in 2019, tensions between the two businesses rose after Apple threatened to remove Facebook from the App Store if it didn’t improve its efforts to stop the trafficking of domestic workers in the Middle East.

With the help of the Metaverse, Facebook could be freed from these limitations in the future. Suppose Facebook is successful in becoming a forerunner in the Metaverse. In that case, it will be the firm creating and selling the virtual reality headsets needed to access it, and it may also have control over a sizable app store that sells products for the Metaverse. This would give Facebook power and influence over the future Internet that it does not now have on mobile devices.

4. To feel present with the people we care about was the ideal.

In a speech, Zuckerberg recalled that his childhood ambition was to create tools that would let users “feel present with the people we care about.” This is significant for two factors. The first is that “being present” and “feeling present” are two different concepts. The former, in my opinion, is far more crucial for creating genuine connections with the people you care about.

The second is that Facebook and Instagram were designed from the ground up with the idea that real connections should be abandoned in favor of virtual ones. Instead of conversing at the dinner table, people sit across from one another and read through their Facebook News Feed. The Facebook Papers have taught us that the firm will do everything to keep users interested and spend more time on Facebook.

Zuckerberg states, “We’re a corporation that focuses on connecting people.” “We focus on developing technology so people can engage with one other, while most other tech businesses focus on how people interact with technology.”

5. In the future, you only need a set of glasses to…

In his keynote address at Connect, Mark Zuckerberg predicted a time when these immersive experiences will be possible “with just a pair of glasses.” In an interview with Ben Thompson of Stratechery, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg elaborated on the concept, saying, “I do think that for augmented reality, for example, one of the killer use cases is basically going to be you’re going to have glasses and you’re going to have something like EMG on your wrist and you’re going to be able to have a message thread going on when you’re in the middle of a meeting or doing something else and no one else is even going to notice.”
It was interesting to note that Zuckerberg’s “killer use case” for how people can communicate in the Metaverse entails texting someone while speaking to them face-to-face. In essence, the Metaverse is similar to the ordinary Internet, except that it is less noticeable when someone is staring at you when using it. That may not be the future we have all been promised, though.

6. Holograms may someday replace many everyday objects.

Zuckerberg explained in his letter that by creating a world with limitless possibilities, certain things would no longer require physical existence.

He said, he said that all the tangible items you have now that might one day all be holograms. “Instead of being actual items put together in factories, your TV, your ideal workstation with multiple displays, your board games, and more, will be holograms created by creators all over the world.”

Facebook’s development approach includes using new technical infrastructures, such as augmented reality glasses, virtual reality experiences, or other displays, to interact with these virtual objects. This is about improving the time we now spend on screens, not about spending more time in front of them.

To make its gadgets accessible to as many people as possible, Facebook also intends to offer them “at cost or subsidised.”

We anticipate that the Metaverse will employ millions of artists and developers over the next ten years, reach a billion users, and support hundreds of billions of dollars in digital commerce.

What Can Be Anticipated From The Metaverse?

According to Zuckerberg, in the coming ten years, most people will spend their time on the fully immersive, 3D version of the Internet. Avatars will make floating in space possible in the Metaverse. There will be fantasy and photorealistic avatars, as well as various outfits. The “sense of presence” will be what makes the Metaverse unique.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrency technology, according to the CEO, will be crucial.

People can invite others into the virtual world via the Metaverse. According to Zuckerberg, teleportation in the Metaverse is similar to clicking links online.

In the real world, people can project holograms of themselves.

The business also unveiled upgrades to its AR and VR products. Others may invite people to Horizon House, which is the social network equivalent of their home, and make calls to pals using Messenger using their VR headset, for instance.

08. Metaverse Gaming

Through the Metaverse, one may play chess, tennis, and other games with anybody in any part of the world.

The creators of the well-known video game Arizona Sunshine, Vertigo Games, have also joined the Metaverse.

The following games will be released on Quest: Beat Saber, Grand Theft Auto, Blade and Sorcery Nomad, and the Battle Royale game Population One.

While exercising, one may also have a completely immersive experience.

9. What Is Facebook’s Business Plan?

It sounds like a megalomaniac grabbed my content and put it through some strange self-aggrandizing filter after listening to Mark Zuckerberg speak. It’s the strangest thing, I guess. And I always imagined that when you would finally appear, a hundred million small business owners would be operating all over the place. Additionally, there wouldn’t be an overlord.

He agrees with me in thinking that Facebook is angry that Apple has taken control of its advertising business. Therefore, the corporation can attempt to make Oculus “the platform” for the future by concentrating on the Metaverse. Then Meta takes over as this domain’s new guardian. Here is Jarod’s opinion:

I’m going to hazard a bet that the Meta wouldn’t have occurred if Tim Cook hadn’t started to restrict Facebook’s access to free data. We don’t own the peripheral device that receives the data in the current round, which is what Meta, in my opinion, is about. Therefore, in the future, we must triumph in the next device battle to obtain the data. While having smart speakers, doorknobs, and other devices would be fantastic, Amazon already has them. So let’s use headphones. I believe that’s what it finally comes down to. It has to do with the requirement that you possess an edge device to exercise control over whether your cloud is good or evil. He requires a gadget, which he does not currently own, to make it wicked, according to what is known about him.

10. Our Responsibility and Role

There won’t be a single firm that develops the Metaverse. It will be created by designers and developers who create new interactive experiences and digital products that open a broader creative economy than the one currently confined by platforms and regulations.

To make the Metaverse a reality, we must hasten the development of core technologies, social platforms, and creative tools. We also must weave these technologies via our social media applications. We will devote our efforts to assisting in realizing the promise of the Metaverse, which we believe may enable more excellent social experiences than anything that is now possible.

We don’t construct services to generate money; we make money to build better services, as I said in our first founder’s letter. In many respects, the previous five years have been humbling for both my company and me. I’ve realized that creating items that people enjoy isn’t enough, which is one of my primary lessons.

I’ve grown to appreciate how complex the Internet’s narrative is. Every chapter introduces fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and brand-new difficulties, dangers, and challenges to long-held interests. To create the best possible version of this future, we must collaborate from the outset.
