Facebook intends to use the decision to enter the virtual “metaverse further” and change the company’s name to Meta to significantly change how it conducts business.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a part of a strategy to stay in step with regulators while developing new technology, has some of the strictest data privacy and processing rules worldwide. As a result, the idea of the Metaverse is currently centered around Europe.
Facebook will likely become even more dominant than it already is if the Metaverse develops as it sees fit. Currently, Facebook’s business is constrained by the two digital behemoths, Apple and Google, who essentially control access to the mobile Internet.
For compatibility with Apple and Google operating systems, Facebook builds its mobile app software. In exchange, the iPhone app for Facebook gets a 30 percent fee split between Apple and Google (a policy Facebook has long denounced). Apple has the power to exert pressure on Facebook regarding its content policies. For example, in 2019, tensions between the two businesses rose after Apple threatened to remove Facebook from the App Store if it didn’t improve its efforts to stop the trafficking of domestic workers in the Middle East.
With the help of the Metaverse, Facebook could be freed from these limitations in the future. Suppose Facebook is successful in becoming a forerunner in the Metaverse. In that case, it will be the firm creating and selling the virtual reality headsets needed to access it, and it may also have control over a sizable app store that sells products for the Metaverse. This would give Facebook power and influence over the future Internet that it does not now have on mobile devices.
In a speech, Zuckerberg recalled that his childhood ambition was to create tools that would let users “feel present with the people we care about.” This is significant for two factors. The first is that “being present” and “feeling present” are two different concepts. The former, in my opinion, is far more crucial for creating genuine connections with the people you care about.
The second is that Facebook and Instagram were designed from the ground up with the idea that real connections should be abandoned in favor of virtual ones. Instead of conversing at the dinner table, people sit across from one another and read through their Facebook News Feed. The Facebook Papers have taught us that the firm will do everything to keep users interested and spend more time on Facebook.

It was interesting to note that Zuckerberg’s “killer use case” for how people can communicate in the Metaverse entails texting someone while speaking to them face-to-face. In essence, the Metaverse is similar to the ordinary Internet, except that it is less noticeable when someone is staring at you when using it. That may not be the future we have all been promised, though.
Zuckerberg explained in his letter that by creating a world with limitless possibilities, certain things would no longer require physical existence.
